Technical Description
Seismic data acquired in real time is continuously scanned for arrivals of seismic waves. If such arrivals are detected at multiple stations within a certain time window, an earthquake is assumed to have occurred. The earthquake is automatically located and its magnitude estimated. If shaking above MMI IV is deemed to have taken place, the earthquake location and magnitude are refined by a seismologist. Any other earthquake reported felt by a member of the public is also routinely located. The New Zealand Earthquake Commission and Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management are advised of all such events, and take appropriate actions. Events above magnitude 6.0 are also reported to other south-west Pacific national authorities. Volcano monitoring uses seismic, visual, deformation and geochemical techniques to watch the active volcanic centres (particularly White Island, Ruapehu and Tongariro/Ngauruhoe) in New Zealand. Automatic tsunami warning systems are not yet available in New Zealand, but New Zealand authorities are alerted to major Pacific region events by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
