Title
EWS for Volcanic Eruption, Earthquake in America
Maintained By Seismic Research Unit, University of the West Indies
Warning Years 1979, 1982
Variable Monitored seismic activity, geothermal activity, ground deformation at volcanoes, morphological changes, geochemistry of volcanic products
Format GIS, ASCII, Images, Other
Continuous Data No
Real Time Data No
Data Source Seismic Research Unit, University of West Indies
Data Flow granted for > 20 years
Funded Life Time of EWS > 20 years
Technical Description
An integration of all data collected including seismological, geological, geochemical, geodetic and observational to determine the state of activity at individual volanic centres. See the following website for an example of the method used to determine alert levels at Eastern Caribbean volcanoes http://www.uwiseismic.com/kejalert.html Seismological data have been collected over the past 50 years. This, along with additional historical (pre-instrumental) data have allowed the determination of areas at highest risk from future earthquake activity. Quantitative estimates of the level of seismic hazard in the eastern Caribbean can be found http://www.uwiseismic.com/seishaz.html
Publications
See http://www.uwiseismic.com/seisbib.html for a listing of publications since 1995.
Conditions that Trigger The Warning
The specific conditions will vary slightly depending on the volcanic centre and island involved. However, a good example of the conditions used to trigger a warning can be found at http://www.uwiseismic.com/kejalert.html
